TOURISM OF EXCELLENCE AWARDS: 2010 CALL FOR NOMINATIONS The New York State Travel & Vacation Association will recognize leaders in New York State’s travel and tourism industry who have achieved a high level of excellence and accomplishment. Winning individuals or organizations are selected on the basis of demonstrated commitment, leadership, and accomplishment in the travel and tourism sector. Winners will be honored at the Empire State Tourism Conference Awards Banquet, Tuesday Evening, February 9th at the Marriott Hotel, 189 Wolf Rd., Albany. AWARDS Categories (All Nominees must work and reside in New York State) Marketing and Advertising: Entries submitted in this category may include creative domestic and international marketing, promotions, advertising, and/or public relations efforts that promote New York State as a travel and tourism destination. Entire annual campaigns are eligible as well as niche promotions, web sites, blogs, print advertising, TV and radio spots and social media promotions. Criteria: Creativity and high levels of conversion, attendance, click-throughs, publicity exposure (mentions, clips, etc.), economic impact and/or consumer response. Cultural Heritage: This category includes projects or programs aimed at exposing visitors to the state’s unique cultural aspects. Examples: community promotions exclusively featuring arts, history and/or culture, interpretive exhibits, websites or printed materials; special events such as festivals, and trails (e.g. wine, history or recreation). Criteria: Creativity in using resources, partnerships and local collaboration; economic impact or growth in revenues, attendance or membership Tourism Development: An award for a tourism destination, attraction (non-profit or for profit), or association of businesses that successfully attracts visitors as the result of a clearly articulated vision, strategy and plan of execution. Criteria: A brief outline of the vision and strategy and examples of how the strategy was implemented, which could include websites, collateral, advertising, special events, media coverage and infrastructure expansion or improvements. It could also include visitation numbers, sales tax revenues and visitor satisfaction surveys. Visitor Service: This award goes to a community or destination that has worked strategically to welcome visitors more effectively. Projects/Programs may include way-finding signs, informative and visitor friendly websites, docent training, implementation of a community tourism strategy, collaborative promotion of local attractions, etc. Criteria: Submissions could include brochures, pictures, copy of tourism strategies, docent training guides, customer evaluations and letters, links to websites and publicity clips, and when appropriate, a list of the partnering organizations. Presidential Award: Given in recognition of outstanding service to the tourism industry and the New York State Travel and Vacation Association. Criteria: Support of progressive tourism legislation, community development, and project funding are examples of positive initiatives.
